The best NEW Android games from August 2021:

DC: Batman Bat-Tech Edition

Price: Free

DC: Batman Bat-Tech Edition is a new augmented reality game. The game features ten missions overall which tell a unique Batman story. Each mission has you using various pieces of Batman equipment in an augmented reality space. Some examples include a Batmobile level that is basically an endless runner along with a Batarang practice game. On top of the base game, there is a selfie mode with a few face filters along with a sticker pack. Finally, the game even includes five digital comics exclusive to this game. It’s a free title and it’s also family-friendly.

KonoSuba: Fantastic Days

Price: Free to play

KonoSuba: Fantastic Days is a new gacha game based on the popular comedy-adventure anime. It more or less follows the storyline of the original anime so it’s a chance for fans to relive moments from the game. Players put a party together, defeat bad guys, and progress through the story. The combat is real-time with ability cooldowns. It’s fun enough but nothing you haven’t seen before. The microtransactions could be better, but otherwise, the game is pretty fun.

Mech Arena: Robot Showdown

Price: Free to play

Mech Arena: Robot Showdown is an online multiplayer game. Players pick a mech, customize and upgrade it, and then fight it against other players. The various mechs have their strengths and weaknesses. For instance, there’s a melee-focused one as well as a long-distance focused one. The online element consists of a 5v5 multiplayer deathmatch. That’s basically it. The premise is pretty simple. Most of the complex parts of it involve choosing and upgrading your mechs. There seems to be some connection and freezing issues with the game, but it is new so bugs are to be expected.

My Time in Portia

Price: $7.99

My Time in Portia is one of those rare big releases that we’ll probably add to our best of the year list when it comes time for that. It’s a simulation game where you start out inheriting a workshop. You grow your workshop, craft various items for the town, build a family, and learn even more skills and techniques. Yes, there is a farming sim element to this game as well. Another option is to take up arms and go sifting through ruins for lost treasure, so there is a combat element to this as well. It competes favorably with games like Harvest Moon and Stardew Valley so fans of those games will probably enjoy this one too.

Mystic Gunner

Price: Free to play

Mystic Gunner is a new game from Buff Studio, developers of Underworld Office, Buff Knight, and 7Days. It’s a run-and-gun shooter type of game with some roguelike and bullet hell elements. Players drop into randomly generated levels and shoot up the bad guys while avoiding being shot themselves. There are also some RPG elements as your character levels up and gets better. The controls are okay. They could be a lot better, especially as the game gets harder. The game is quite good, but it does need a bit of polish.

NieR Re[in]carnation

Price: Free to play

NieR Re[in]carnation is a mobile RPG gacha based on the popular NieR series. It features music from Keiichi Okabe and creative direction from Yoko Taro. Thus, you can expect some quirky storytelling and outstanding music. Otherwise, the game is actually pretty easy to play. You compose a team, take on story quests, and keep on doing that until you’re done. Characters and weapons are upgradeable. Combat is done automatically, with players choosing to use abilities with timers. However, if you use auto-mode, you really can’t tell the difference. This is a game that is more fun to look at than physically play, but that’s okay because it looks really good.

Old Friends Dog Game

Price: Free to play

Old Friends Dog Game is a simulation game about a sanctuary specifically for old dogs. It’s named after an actual dog sanctuary for senior dogs. Players create their sanctuary, nurture dogs in their golden years, and learn more about each dog. It’s absolutely adorable. There are plenty of other things you can do as well. The only negative part of the game is the in-app purchases. The game makes you wait for everything and encourages you to buy frequently. Most people don’t seem to care, though, and you can still have fun even if you ignore the micro transactions. It just takes longer.

Potato Smash

Price: Free to play

Potato Smash is a tower defense game featuring a cast of potatoes. The game also features merging mechanics like you see in idle games. You set up your board with various potatoes with various abilities to stop the bad guys from getting through. Maps are simple enough to set up. You can upgrade your potatoes as you play for maximum defense. The game boasts over 100 potatoes with different skills. You also face off against other players to see who is best at tower defending. It’s free to play but aside from some bugs, we didn’t see any huge issues with it.

Tales of the Mirror

Price: $2.99

Tales of the Mirror is a visual novel game. That means the game centers itself around its narrative rather than game mechanics. The game revolves around players solving mysteries by finding clues and talking to other NPCs. That is the major game loop throughout the game and it’s not a very difficult game to play. However, players still need to pay attention. In addition to the story, the game features a fun art style and some surprisingly decent music. It’s also relatively inexpensive at $2.99.

War of Survivors

Price: Free to play

War of Survivors is another online multiplayer game with strategy and survival elements. It takes place in a post-apocalyptic world with zombies, mutants, and other monsters. The strategy part of this game has you training troops and attacking other players for their resources. The survival aspects include exploration, developing your base, and finding more resources. The game is rather buggy and could use a couple of coats of polish. However, it has some potential to be a good game in its genre.
